What to look for when choosing a DAM

How intelligent is the tagging?

How large is the vocabulary? Are multiple languages supported? Are there hierarchical terms, synonyms and controlled vocabularies? Or just simple auto-tagging?

Is face recognition available?

Can the system automatically detect and assign people? Is the feature built in or only available as an expensive add-on?

Where are your files stored?

Do you have to upload all media to the vendor's cloud? Or can you continue using your existing infrastructure (NAS, S3, local storage)? Is there vendor lock-in?

What about data privacy?

Where is your data hosted? Is the vendor subject to GDPR or US law? Is there an audit trail and granular access rights?

How is media distributed?

Can you distribute media automatically to multiple channels? Are formats converted automatically? Or are there only download links?

Is the API accessible to third-party developers?

Is there a documented REST API in every plan or only from Enterprise level? Are the endpoints self-discoverable (HATEOAS) and does the spec follow open standards (OpenAPI/Swagger)? Or is the API a black box behind a sales call?

How good is the AI agent integration?

Can the DAM be integrated into modern AI tools such as Claude Desktop, n8n or LangChain? Does the vendor offer an MCP server (Model Context Protocol) or are you dependent on custom development?

What does it actually cost?

Are there transparent, public prices? A free entry point to try it out? Or do you first have to talk to sales just to find out a price?
